16  iPhone Forum / iPhone Chat / Telstra linked to Australia's iPhone launch on: February 26, 2008, 07:31:31 am
Aussie seem to be in the news alot lately with the pending Launch.

Some more info.

TELSTRA has emerged as the favourite operator to offer the hotly awaited iPhone.

Telstra CEO Sol Trujillo this week confirmed talks had already begun with Apple, which plans to launch the handset in Australia next year.

Mr Trujillo said Telstra would be interested in the device if it delivered an enhanced experience for their customers.

"The answer is simple: yes we'd be interested and we're exploring that option," he said.

"We've had conversations with Apple and a lot of others and what's interesting now is that everybody's now responding to the Apple iPhone.

"Almost every supplier has big plans in the next six to 12 months with their version of an iPhone in response."

The Next G network operates at the rarer 850Mhz frequency and requires specialised handsets.

Mr Trujillo predicted Apple would produce a compatible iPhone.

"The company they introduced the iPhone with in the US is Cingular and obviously we have a very good relationship with Cingular (now called AT&T)," he said.

Apple has sold more than 1.4 million iPhones in the US since its launch in late June.

AT&T, the exclusive operator, agreed to a revenue-sharing deal on all data and voice calls.

Figures reveal about 20 per cent of iPhones sold were unlocked by users who either had existing plans with competing networks or who lived in other countries, including Australia.

Mr Trujillo said deals struck between Apple and AT&T in the US, O2 in the UK, T Mobile in Germany and Orange in France - all believed to involve revenue sharing - would have no bearing on a possible deal between Apple and Telstra.

Apple Australia offered no comment.

17  iPhone Forum / iPhone Chat / Australia - Local laws could scuttle iPhone deals on: February 26, 2008, 07:28:55 am
The release of Apple's iPhone in Australia could be illegal under current trade practices laws, according to a group of Queensland law researchers.

The legal hiccup could delay the arrival of the must-have gadget phone, which is expected in Asia and Australia some time this year.

However, some are concerned that the phone's exclusivity deals with mobile carriers is anti-competitive.

"The iPhone is breaking new ground in using technology to restrict customer's choice in technology markets," Queensland University of Technology (QUT) law researcher Dale Clapperton said.

The finding comes from an analysis of the Apple iPhone under Australia's competition laws by Mr Clapperton and fellow QUT law expert Professor Stephen Corones, which was published in the QUT Law and Justice Journal.

In the United States iPhone buyers are required to sign a two-year mobile contract with AT&T before the iPhone will operate. Similar agreements in the United Kingdom, France and Germany tie iPhone owners to one network.

However, if Apple employ a similar strategy in Australia it could fall foul of the Trade Practices Act provision dealing with third-line forcing.

"This law will greatly simplify the task of seeking redress for such behaviour through the courts and could prove a deterrent for exclusive release of the iPhone with one carrier," Mr Clapperton said.

"If Apple enter into an exclusive agreement with any particular carrier then it would be a matter for the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) as to whether that agreement was anticompetitive and contravened the trade practices act."

"It would be like Ford deciding that from now on all of the cars they produce can only use be used with petrol from Shell."

"If you fill your car up with fuel from BP the ignition system will detect that and shut down the car."

"Forcing consumers to deal with third-party companies for unrelated products and services is a fundamentally bad thing for competition."

The situation would be different to what currently exists in Australia, where mobile phone carriers can SIM-lock a phone to prevent its use on another network.

Mr Clapperton believes any future release of the iPhone in Australia should be non-exclusive.

"Ideally I'd like to see a version of the iPhone released in Australia that's not locked to any carriers at all, although that doesn't seem likely based on what's happened in the past."

Apple Australia were contacted, but declined to comment.

Hey Dimsim,

Do you have the link for any articles?

I was reading "Can't remember where" that when you are running you can program your favourite energising song when you are starting to do it tough. The statistics of the run are download and the data can be analysied to see where you used your turbo button adn how your body responded.

I think this is a fantastic feature and was wondering if anyone knows or has any links that I can see more features.

Thanks

Hi Guy's,

Does anyone out there know if the user is allowed (legally) to unlock the iPhone?

Can someone pull up the T&C's of the phone at purchase (I threw mine out  Sad) to see if they thought of this eventuality.

Hi Zee,

Interesting analogy you have come up with but the question is how much did AT&T pay apple for the rights of exclusivity?

How is this scenario for an unconfirmed conspiracy.

Apple sold the rights for a lot of money for the exclusive rights to the iphone with the condition that once the iphone is cracked, the exclusivity agreement is null and void. AT&T put the locks on the system which their programmers thought unbreakable therefore agreed. Now Apple realising that its unit had a shelf life paid for a hacker to crack the AT&T stranglehold on the phone as this would limit the volume of phones that can be sold.

Therefore Apple have received $$$ for exclusivity, met its legal agreement and now it has the market to move its product.  Cool

Business is business after all

The phone has been cracked now so the price should fall as the monopoly with AT&T is over  Grin.

It would be interesting to know how much the exclusive agreement with AT&T was sold for and who is going to foot the bill for the cracking of the phone  Shocked.

Stay tuned for more information on this one as there should be a high profile sacking over who was responsible for keeping the IP of the phone exclusive and how the two parties are going to reach agreement for the stuff up.

27  News Section / iPhone News / Re: 3G iPhone coming in '08? on: September 20, 2007, 09:03:06 am
The iPhone should have come out in 3g to begin with. Maybe Mr Jobs will be generous unough to hand back another $100 to its valued members  Roll Eyes.

This is a technology game and every 6 months if Apple don't bring out new technology then some other competitor will rip the design and develop a cheaper clone. Look at Windows as a case in point. Therefore people will upgrade or slowly be migrated to the new product by which time they will miss out on the redundant items in the versions in between.

Either way product development won't stop for any sales related issues

http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2007/09/jobs_confirms_3g_iphone_coming.html

Pretty interesting. Sounds like its good news for all those in the Asia Pacific region. And it just means that all those in the US (and now UK & Europe) are going to have to spend money to upgrade! Sound pretty dodgy for them...

Whats everyone else rekon?
