Monday a serious outage occurred for cell phone users who rely on AT&T?s data network for an Internet connection. It was suspected that massive sales of the iPhone and it?s users trying to access the network were the cause. CNET reports that this isn?t the case. The problem was due to a glitch in AT&T?s network which rerouted data traffic to other regions that could not handle the load. A spokesperson for AT&T, Mark Siegel has stated that the western and midwestern regions were heavily affected while other regions fared a bit better throughout the dilemma. From roughly 10 AM PST to 4 PM PST many subscribers could not get any data access from AT&T including those 3G networks. Siegel has also stated that the hundreds of thousands of people who activated their newly bought iPhones were also not a cause of the widespread data outage Monday and that AT&T has spent 50 million dollars to upgrade its network just for the launch of the iPhone. Even with the upgrades problems were widespread whether they be activation woes or unable to access data networks
